Mobile Learning

Today's demonstration was better than last week, in my opinion. I really found the use of Ipods in a class to be very interesting to hear about. Along with ebooks, these types of technology can increase access to authentic materials that could help students increase their knowledge in language learning. It also made me think about the article by Pensky (2001) that discusses digital immigrants. I would be somewhat concerned for slow typing and usage of such materials though, especially if students aren't familiar with them. So, I think time and access would be the two biggest concerns with these types of emerging technologies.

Regarding Emergent and Established CALL, I found the discussion to be very interesting in regards to the views of Esther. I think that emergent CALL is hard to identify just because we don't know exactly how new some programs or technologies are. So, would that make them 'emergent' to us? lol. Established CALL is very easy to understand and I would think that programs like PPT, MS Word would be very established for most of us.

Karen's demonstration was very well performed. I learned a lot about MOOs and found the fact that she did her demonstration on Adobe very interesting. I'd like to it next year when I take Esther's online culture class. Good job, Karen!

  1. Thanks, Jesse. It was definitely an experience. I'd want a lot more practice using Adobe Connect before using it for a "real" class. I think the D2L chat room is challenging enough, and it just involves monitoring text input, not sound and video as well.

  2. I agree Jesse - Karen's ability to use Adobe for your presentation was very impressive!! I was too nervous to do so!!

The Emergent and Established CALL was very interesting to discuss. I see as Emergent or Established to the CALL community, but I can see how you see it as if it is emergent or established to us as educators.

  3. I would also want a few trial runs with Adobe A.C. before using it i a real class. Although, if I teach online next semester, I think i'm going to try and utilize it in my online class once a week just to review grammar/cultural items. As a TA I think i'd have access to it? The use of technology in my actual learning now really has me excited to teach next semester.

  4. I think anyone teaching in the MnSCU system should have access to Adobe acrobat connect. I can see that it might be problematic if the class is too big. 9 students is manageable, but 25 would be tricky.

I agree with Mandy's comment. A technology might be "established" for you, but still relatively new in the field of CALL, and even newer with students! They are sometimes less technologically savvy than they are portrayed.

  5. I like all the presentations as they tell us something from a different perspectives. It is true that last week presentation was really catching because of the e-book and the use of phone in class.
I am not the only surprised by the use of phone(Ipad) as Laura, as an american and a teacher in an american school was very surprised too. Things are apparently moving fast here
